The island of Iriomote in Okinawa Prefecture is one of the Japanese islands that is taking action to safeguard its indigenous wild cat. The severely endangered Iriomote cat, also called the Iriomote Mountain Cat, is a unique to the island.
The Iriomote municipal government set a limit on tourism of 220,000 tourists annually in order to safeguard this species. This action aims to lessen the negative effects of human activities on the habitat of cats while also halting the entry of exotic species and the transmission of infectious diseases that could damage the local ecosystem.
The island’s lush forests are home to the little, nimble Iriomote cat. One of the rarest cat species in the world, it is thought that there are just approximately 100 individuals left in the wild. The invasion of feral cats and dogs, habitat loss from logging, road development, and other dangers all affect the cat.
The local administration wants to lessen the disturbance to the cat’s habitat and the possibility of unintentional interactions that can result in the cat’s harm or demise by reducing the amount of tourists who come to the island. A reservation system that caps the number of daily visitors to the island will be used to enforce the tourism cap.
This action is a part of a larger conservation initiative that also involves habitat restoration, population tracking for cats, and awareness-raising campaigns to highlight the value of preserving the island’s distinctive biodiversity.
