OceanGate referred to the dead men on the Titan sub as “true explorers.”

On June 19, 2023, a submersible operated by OceanGate Expeditions lost contact with the surface vessel, Polar Prince, while on a mission to explore the wreck of the Titanic. The sub, named Titan, carried five passengers who were all presumed dead.

What happened with OceanGate?

The Titan was on a four-day expedition to the Titanic when it lost contact with the Polar Prince at approximately 10:30 AM EST. The sub was operating at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 meters), and the water temperature was 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 degrees Celsius).

Search and rescue efforts

The US Coast Guard and other search and rescue teams have been searching for the Titan since it went missing. However, the chances of finding the missing crew alive are dwindling. The sub was equipped with a four-day supply of oxygen, but that supply is now believed to be exhausted.

Investigation for OceanGate

The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the cause of the accident. The agency said that it is possible that the sub suffered a catastrophic loss of pressure, which would have caused it to implode.

Statement from OceanGate

In a statement released on June 22, 2023, OceanGate Expeditions said that it was “deeply saddened to share that the five passengers aboard the Titan submersible are presumed deceased.” The company said that it would continue to support the search for the Titan, and that it would also be conducting a full investigation into the cause of the accident.

The passengers

  • Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate
  • Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a French navy diver and Titanic expert
  • Hamish Harding, a British businessman and explorer
  • Shahzada Dawood, a vice chairman of the Engro Group
  • Suleman Dawood, a son of Shahzada Dawood

Conclusion

The loss of the Titan and its five passengers is a tragic event. Our condolences go out to the families of the victims. We will continue the search for the sub and investigate the cause.
