AIBA Suspends 4 Federations for Joining ‘Rogue Organization’

The Consequences of Joining a ‘Rogue Organization’: A Look at The International Boxing Association’s Suspension of Four National Federations

AIBA

AIBA suspended four national federations for joining a breakaway organization.

The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has suspended four national federations for joining a “rogue organization.” The suspensions are effective right away and will bar the federations from taking part in any activities that International Boxing Association has approved.

The four federations are:

  • The Boxing Federation of India
  • The Boxing Federation of the Philippines
  • The Boxing Federation of Thailand
  • The Boxing Federation of Venezuela

Umar Kremlev said that the sanctions were necessary to protect the integrity of amateur boxing.

Kremlev stated, “We will not tolerate any attempts to undercut the authority of AIBA. The federations decided to join forces with an unsavory group that is not acknowledged by the Olympic Movement. As a result, they won’t be able to take part in events that the AIBA has approved.

The International Boxing Federation (IBF) is the “rogue organization” to which AIBA is alluding. A number of frustrated AIBA members came together to form the breakaway organization known as the IBF. The Olympic Movement has not acknowledged the IBF, hence its members are not permitted to participate in Olympic competition.

The IBF is facing a serious setback due to the suspension of the four national federations. The IBF had planned to secure recognition from the Olympic Movement using the backing of the four federations. The suspensions, however, make the IBF’s mission considerably more challenging to accomplish.

IBF denounces suspensions:

The IBF has denounced the suspensions as “a politically motivated attack” on the group. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), according to the IBF, will hear its appeal of the sanctions.

The four national federations’ sanctions are the most recent in a string of issues that have dogged AIBA in recent years. People are saying that there has been mismanagement and corruption within the organization.

2019 saw the International Olympic Committee (IOC) ban AIBA from the Olympic Games.

According to the IOC, the organization won’t be allowed to compete again until it satisfies a number of requirements, including changes to its governing structure. AIBA is making efforts to satisfy the IOC’s requirements.

A significant blow for AIBA is the suspension of the four national federations. The IOC has already put pressure on the body to change. The IOC will find it significantly more challenging to admit AIBA back to the Olympic Games as a result of the suspensions.
